XLR8R Magazine Updates

I have probably mentioned before about how much I like XLR8R Magazine, so i was excited to hear that they had updated their website. They have added a new section for downloading new music, and a section showcasing a bunch of new music videos also. There are videos on the site now by artists such as Adult., RJD2, Why?, El-P and K-OS. Very cool.

Orange Juice Anyone?

I came accross another cool little software company the other day by the name of Freshly Squeezed. They have all kinds of products for OSX including a lot of Freeware. I tried out one of their programs called Recent Tunes that helps you post recently played tracks from iTunes onto your website. I really dig these little software companies like this.

ReadyMade Magazine

In case you hadn't noticed by now, I am a huge 'zine-freak. I spend a hefty amount of my paycheck every month on various magazines, as well as a hefty amount of time at B&N flipping pages. One magazine that caught my eye quite some time ago was ReadyMade Magazine. It's kind of like Martha Stewart for cool kids. It's got all kinds of random DIY projects, anything from making a wallet out of duct tape to making lamps out of old milk jugs they have covered it. So if you are looking for cheap DIY projects, check this one out.

You Don't Know UPSO, You Don't Know Jack

You may have seen his work without knowing who was behind it, I remember seeing his Threadless t-shirt long before knowing who he was, so if you don't know UPSO you should check him out now. He has done iullustrations for publications ranging from Newsweek to XLR8R, and has done design for clients such as Poketo, Beautiful Decay, Kidrobot and more. His work rocks, so go check it out.

Post-Folk Nation

Why? of Anticon

Folk-Hop, Psych-Rock, Post-Folk, whatever you call it, it's here and making quite and impact. With bands like Grandaddy, American Analog Set, Deerhoof, Pinback and more bringing it into the forefront an entire movement has been spawned. On the 1st of November a couple of super-good bands that fall into this genre are going to be appearing at Kilby Court here in Salt Lake: Aqueduct and Why? of Anticon Records, both of which are very good.

See for yourself:

The Gloss

Well, in the unlikely event you randomly find yourself spending a day shopping in Shanghai, finding a store with trendy clothing for men can be quite a task. This won't last for long, as in the coming years Shanghai will become the next New York/London/Tokyo, but on my recent trip I was only able to find a few stores that I actually liked. One of these stores was located in the ultra-posh Xintiandi. A place that typically attracts wealthy foreigners looking for a break from Shanghai's madness. But, in this area flooded with coffee shops and sheik cocktail bars, I stubbled accross a little boutique by the name of The Gloss that I was pretty impressed with. The store is apparently swiss owned and was designed with a simplistic, but really cool feel. Labels carried include Boxfresh and 24Fifty SF. They also had a wide variety of denim, handbags, wallets and vinyl toys. Although, be prepared to spend U.S. boutique prices, afterall it IS in Xintiandi. More info on The Gloss at Superfuture.

If you are on a budget, but still in need of some cool graphic tees, try a little shop on Changle Lu by the name of The Thing. Some of the shirts are rip-offs of Threadless tees, but they do have a fairly wide selection of tees for around 10USD. So it's worth a look.

Mixtape Madness

Man, the good ol' days of the mixtape. This sure does bring back memories. Cassette Jam 05 showcases over 180 different cassettes. I remember using quite a few of these to record my favorite Bel Biv Devoe and Bobby Brown tracks. Awesome.

Home Sweet Home

I got home last Thursday from a month long trip to China, this explains Mesh Magazine's online absence for the past month! china is a crazy place and I had a great trip, I stayed in Shanghai most of the time, but was able to take a train up to Beijing for a short trip and made it to the Great Wall among some other amazing sights. Overall it was an amazing trip, but I am back in the States now and Mesh is in full effect.
