Incite Online

I know I mentioned XLR8R's new website before, but I just wanted to update quickly on their music download section they are calling Incite Online. I have really been diggin' the way they have this set up. Each week they showcase a snippet of five of their favorite artists in their podcast, which you should subscribe to via iTunes immediatly, then they post the full song available to download at their site. I like this a lot, because I can't count how many times I have really liked a song on a podcast and never been able to find the song.

Infiltration Magazine

Infiltration Magazine is a publication about "going places your not supposed to go", or in other words urban exploration. This magazine peaked my interest because I have always had an interest in abandoned buidlings and tunnels, but until just a couple years ago had no idea it was such a popular and organized activity. Infiltration's website features urban exploration resources, journals, photos and forums so you can share your own experiences. The 'zine itself is a black and white non-glossy publication, but at only $3 a pop I's say it's worth a look.

Happy B-Day Steve Aoki

If you live in SoCal and are looking for a hot-spot to end up tomorrow night, I suggest Cinespace. Not only are The Subways playing live, but it's the official birthday bash of Dim Mak's Steve Aoki AKA Kid Millionaire and if you are lucky you will end up getting your mug posted on The Cobra Snake. I am sure it will be a night to remember.

Sony Bravia Ad - Full of Colour

For as many dumb commercials there are out there, it really makes you appreciate the ones that are actually good. People who make marketing an art more than just presenting a product and saying "here is it, buy it". For example the new spot for Sony's new Bravia hi-def television done by Danish director Nicolai Fuglsig. To make the commercial they dropped over 250,000 giant-sized bouncy balls down the streets of San Francisco, and was done completely without computer graphics.

Dream Jobs Galore

For those of you who are in search of not just "any old job", rather a job you actually enjoy, I give you Malakye. Malakye is a site similar to other job searching and resume posting sites, but all the jobs listed have to do with the action-sports industry. If you are into snowboarding, skateboarding or surfing and looking to work in that industry this is the place to search.

New Name, New Look, Same Content

Hey peeps, change is in the wind and with it comes TheDopeFiend, our new name and identity. Our previous name "Mesh Magazine" was originally a printed publication, and then turned to strictly web based editorial, making it less of a magazine and more of just a blog-type site. Therefore, we decided a new name and look might be appropriate. So update your bookmarks and your feeds, the new addy is www.thedopefiend.com!

Pandora: Customize Your Radio

Pandora is a web based radio program, but not just any radio program. Pandora allows you to customize each station you create and listen to. When you login, you are asked to enter a favorite artist or song. After comparing that song or artist with their database a channel is created with music similar to the one you entered. If the song they play is a song you don't like, simply tell them and they will never play in again on your station. I am actaully pretty suprised at the music they have, at this very moment I am listening to Architecture in Helsinki after creating my own "Lali Puna" station. Cool place to find and hear new music.

Beautiful Decay Saves the Day

With the internet being so saturated with random t-shirt companies I am finding it more difficult to find tees that I actually like. I often wonder wonder what it is about these lame-ass tees with the random stupid sayings on them that makes people buy them (you know the ones I am talking about). If you are also having a hard time finding good tees, rest assured, Beautiful Decay has a store full of awesome shirts.

New TokiDoki Gear

For years TokiDoki (Simone Legno) has been on my list of most loved artists and he is blowing up! We both share the same love for Japanese culture and Japanese women, and the characters in his art are simply beautiful. I can't seem to get enough. This is why I was so excited when I saw the TokiDoki exhibit at Las Vegas' Magic Tradeshow along with all the goods. Some of the new gear includes Skate decks (as shown), iSkins for the iPod Minis, TokiDoki tote bags by LeSportSac, vinyl toys and more. Many of these products are currently available in the TokiDoki online store along with tees, pins, hair clips, belt buckles and more. Time to blow a paycheck.

Adult. @ Kilby

With the release of their latest album "Gimmie Trouble', being on the cover of URB Magazine last month, adding a third member to the group and their 35-stop North American tour Adult. has gained quite a buzz. This is why I was surprised to hear they were making a stop here in SLC. According to their label Thrill Jockey Records Adult. is "world-renowned" for their performances. And although I am not extremely fond of most of their music, just the fact they are playing in such a small, personal venue makes me want to go.

Adult. @ Kibly Court - 11.18.05
Opening: Genders, Ok Ikumi and taughtme
$7 in advance, $8 at the door

Stussy and Levi's Collaborate

A lot of kids I talk to think of Stussy as some brand in the 90's that slowly faded away and went to Target like Mossimo or something. But Stussy has gone nowhere, their clothes are as cool as ever and their new XXV collaboration they have done with Levi's proves it.

The Turkey Cobra Tee

If you don't know who Mark the Cobrasnake is, then don't even bother reading this. Because you won't understand why scenester kids around the nation will be flocking in massive amounts to buy these Turkey Cobra tees of his. Apparently there are only 150 of the shirt to be printed, and of course they will be on American Apparel. So if you want to be the coolest kid on the block, you had better fork out the $30 in a hurry because they won't last long!

Metro or Cathedral?

Here is an interesting website that showcases some of the world's best designed metros and subways. I had no idea there was such incredible metros out there, some of these look more like cathedrals, palaces or ultra-clubs than subways.

Electric President: Morr Still Kicking Ass

Morr Music has got to be hands down my favorite label at the moment. Every release has at least one track that gets added to my "most listened to" list. One particular album I am really looking forward to is the self titled album due out January, 2005 by Electric Presidents. I can already see posts in music blogs all over the internet titled "Electric Presidents, The Next Postal Service". And by the sounds of what I have heard, that could be exactly what Electric President will be. I am really liking what I have heard so far, very excited to hear the whole album. If anyone knows how to get a hold of this ASAP let me know.

Incase 05

While I was down in Las Vegas this summer, at the Pool Tradeshow they were giving away bags from Incase's new line with paid entry. I was so tempted to go buy a ticket to the tradeshow just to get the bag. Their new line includes 3 series of matching laptop bags, iPod cases, wallets and a journal. I use an Incase bag right now for my iBook, and I am very tempted on getting another with an iPod case to match.

New Invicid Goods

I bought a t-shirt from Invicid over a year ago, and 'til this very day it still hangs in my closet as one of my favorite pieces of clothing. According to the news on his website Mark kirkpatrick will be coming out with new clothing as well as a new site. I am pretty amped to see the new stuff.

Listen Design

Having lived in Salt Lake City for a total of about 5 years now, I have found few designers here I have been impressed with. Not to say there aren't good designers here, but just not many that stand out from the rest. One firm I have had my eyes on for a while now is Listen Design. Over the years Listen Design has gathered a lot of attention, a nice client list and a very impressive portfolio. It's good to see some people in Utah raising the bar in the design industry.

Giving Brand America the Finger

Here is a group of people that are doing something really cool. Are you Generic is a grassroots organization that is fighting what most people simply buy into - "The Brand." Are You Generic not only prints t-shirts and posters with original artwork that contain no branding whatsoever, but they also provide a place for people to share what they are doing to protest these corporate companies. Anyhow, whether you are with them or against them on their social views, I would still give their tees and artwork a look. Good stuff.

Here is a 10% discount code to use for any purchases: 2PNC87

Fresh Out The Box: Boxfresh!

When it comes to fashion Europe has always seemed to be one step ahead of everyone else (except maybe Japan, but that's a whole different story). Boxfresh is just one example of one of the fresh labels coming out of Europe. I'm really liking their new line a lot. Not only is their clothing cool, but they also have some great marketing going on.

Nokia Fashion Collection

I have always been a Nokia man. My very first mobile phone was a Nokia, and about 6 phones later I still own a Nokia. I have always liked their willingness to step outside the box and try something new. That's why I wasn't suprised to see how cool their Fashion collection is. I am especially impressed with the 7280. It's unlike any phone I have ever seen. The phone is incredibly small and has no keypad, just a scroll wheel that looks similar to the iPod's. Way to go Nokia, keep up the good work.

Hong Kong: Front Door/Backdoor

Having a big interest in China and urban living, I think Michael Wolf's new book Hong Kong: Front Door/Back Door looks very interesting. Read more about it Here.

The Future is Here

There's noway I could not mention an artist I recently discovered by the name of The Russian Fusturists, yet another great act coming out of the "Great White North." I am by no means a music critic, so I won't go into much detail about their new album "Our Thickness" (check Pitchfork Media for review here). I will say that it is one of the best albums I have listened to in a long while. The genre they have been discribed as is "bedroom pop," but I wouldn't even try to classify the sound, you must go have a listen yourself.

Scrobble It Up

A website that has quickly worked its way up my personal favorites list is Last.fm/Audioscrobbler. The site has been around for quite sometime, but over this past year they have completely re-vamped the entire site and made a vast amount of improvements. Audioscrobbler basically keeps track of all the music its members listen to through an iTunes or Winamp (for those lame enough to still be using it) plug in. Then it generates all kinds of stats based on the kind of music you listen to. You can get recommendations on new music, find people with similar music taste, listen to music and even broadcast your own music.

8 Bit Peoples Unite

Here is a little something I found several months ago. 8 Bit Peoples is a collection of artists that pay tribute to old-school video game music. The artists on the site make glichy-blippy music, much of it composed on a Nintendo Game boy! Some favorites of mine include Bit Shifter, Minusbaby and Nullsleep. The site has plenty of free downloads, so go take a listen.

A Piece of Shirt

Here is a cool site I recently found cleverly titled A Piece of Shirt. Unlike many other t-shirt sites I have seen, this site has actual news stories and information about the t-shirt and clothing industry, not just posts about t-shirt companies. They also provide promotion for t-shirt companies by offering a free banner at the top of their website. How cool is that? This site is going straight into my bookmarks.

HSH in URB

It has always surprised me the lack of attention Her Space Holiday has gotten. This is soon going to change. With the release of his previous album "The Young Machines," many people started boarding the HSH bandwagon, and with his latest release "The Past Presents the Future" many more are going to recognize. URB Magazine is a monthly must-have for me, and they have featured the artist in their latest issue. I would recommend picking it up. It's a good read. I would also recommend picking up HSH's new album. It's a little different from his previous stuff, but hey, different is good.
